Bikram yoga

Thermal yoga, which was invented in the early 1970s by a native of Calcutta, Bikram Chowdhury. Its meaning is to engage in a room where a tropical climate is artificially created.

Before inventing his own direction (bikram yoga), Bikram repeatedly became the winner of the World Yoga Championship. This title, according to the official biography, Bikram held for several years, until a knee injury placed him on a hospital bed. Doctors were sure that he would never be able to walk on his own, but, practicing according to his own method, Bikram was completely healed. At the age of 20, he moved to America, where he began to promote his revolutionary method of thermal yoga. He argued that all Indian sages lived in a hot and humid climate, and asanas are designed for a heated body, so it is pointless to practice yoga at a temperature of + 20 ° C. In 1973, he opened a college of yoga at Beverly Hills (Bikram's Yoga College of India), where classes were held (and are still held) at a temperature of + 40 ° C and humidity not lower than 40%.

The complex of Bikram Yoga consists of two breathing exercises and 26 Hatha Yoga asanas, which are performed at a very fast pace (from 10 to 60 seconds for each pose). Fans of this trend claim that Bikram Yoga cleanses the body of toxins and slags, brings relief from migraines, asthma, diabetes, helps get rid of problems with the liver and spleen, and quickly recover from injuries. Opponents of thermal yoga are also sufficient: physicians, for example, indicate that physical exertion in high humidity may be harmful to the heart.

Despite the fears of doctors, Bikram Yoga is very popular in Los Angeles. According to Maria Kalinina, the winner of the Moscow Beauty contest of 1988, currently living in the USA and teaching kundalini there, Americans like to combine the effect of a sauna with aerobics. What can not be said about Moscow, where there is not a single studio, in the schedule of which there would be a thermal yoga. The problem, according to Anna Kabanychiy, who taught Bikram Yoga at the Health Factory Club, is that it is difficult to find a suitable room. “There must be stone walls and a floor,” she lists the parameters, “five powerful steam generators and at least two reflectors. Here in the Health Factory, the streams flowed on the windows - this is a sure sign that the climate in the room is correct. ” Anna complains: the clients that went to her in Bikram are no longer engaged in yoga at all, everyone is waiting for the resumption of lessons. But demand, as is well known, creates supply, so the teacher is likely to overestimate the number of students burning with the desire to take asanas in the bath. It would be more of them, maybe, that would be invented.
